Prof. Dr. Jürgen Bast
Jürgen Bast is the spokesperson of the Research Group MeDiMi, head of its coordination unit and Principal Investigator of the legal research project “Territoriality, Public Authority, and Human Rights: the EU’s Border Regimes”. Since 2013, he is Professor of Public Law and European Law at Justus Liebig University Giessen (JLU). Jürgen is the Academic Director of the Refugee Law Clinic, a clinical education program at Giessen law school, and convener of the interdisciplinary “Research Network Migration and Human Rights” (FMM) at JLU. Earlier, he was a Full Professor of International and European Law at Radboud University Nijmegen, the Netherlands, and a Senior Research Fellow at the Max Planck Institute for Comparative Public Law and International Law in Heidelberg, Germany. Jürgen has both studied sociology and law in Frankfurt and Berlin. His postdoctoral lecture qualification comprises public law, European law, public international law, and sociology of law. His main research interests are in migration law, European constitutional law, and the public law of globalization. Recently, he has co-authored the REMAP study on “Human Rights Challenges to European Migration Policy” with Frederik von Harbou and Janna Wessels, and conducted research on the Global Compact for Migration within the framework of an interdisciplinary research collaboration. Beyond MeDiMi, Jürgen is currently working with Armin von Bogdandy to publish a new research volume on EU Constitutional Law.
