Save the date: MeDiMi conference on “Human Rights in Migration Societies”
September 18–20, 2024, Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany
The Research Group MeDiMi is excited to invite you to the international, multidisciplinary conference “Human Rights in Migration Societies. Exploring the Intersection of Human Rights and Migration in Law, Politics, and Everyday Life”. The conference will take place from September 18–20, 2024, at Justus Liebig University Giessen, Germany.
MeDiMi investigates the interwoven processes of legalization, politicization, and everyday practice of human rights discourse in migration societies. With this conference, we aim to further explore the nexus of human rights and migration by fostering the dialogue with other researchers working in related fields and facilitating exchange across established communities and disciplinary boundaries.
Researchers at all career stages and of all backgrounds – from undergraduate and doctoral students to senior academics and independent activist-researchers – are encouraged to join us.
The conference will gather 14 keynote and roundtable speakers, 36 panelists in 11 panels, and more than 30 MeDiMi researchers. It will feature renowned academics from law, social sciences, and cultural studies as well as experienced practitioners and activist voices.
We will kick off the program with an opening keynote on September 18 at 5 pm. Thursday, September 19 and the morning of Friday, September 20 will be dedicated to alternating roundtable discussions in the plenary and parallel panels. The conference will end on Friday, September 20 at 2:30 pm after a concluding keynote.
The speakers and attendees will discuss a wide variety of issues, including:
- Practices of human rights institutions, non-governmental organizations and academic networks in making human rights relevant in migration-related conflicts;
- The role of law, access to courts, strategic litigation, and grassroots activism in these processes;
- The interplay of human rights and democracy and the related practices of activist and academic actors;
- The non-institutional or socio-cultural conditions for human rights practices to occur in migration-related conflicts.
There will be plenty of opportunities for informal exchange and networking as well.
The complete program and more details on the participants, the contributions, and the venue are to follow soon.
Registration for the event will open shortly. Stay tuned on our website and social media!
