MeDiMi's second research phase is confirmed

The German Research Foundation (DFG) has announced the renewal of the MeDiMi project for a second funding period, spanning from 2027 to 2031. This extension allows for the continued investigation of the role of human rights in migration-related conflicts.

Over the next four years, the project will focus on deepening the understanding of the conditions, forms, and consequences of the humanrightization of migration discourse. A central aspect of the research involves analyzing the increasing and systematic questioning of migrants’ human rights. MeDiMi will examine how actors advocating for inclusion interpret and react to these developments: whether they continue to utilize human rights norms as a resource for mobilization or if there is a shift toward alternative discourses of justice and belonging.

The renewed project involves seven sub-projects led by eight Principal Investigators and one coordination unit. The research is a collaborative effort between Justus Liebig University Giessen, Philipps University Marburg, and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), integrating perspectives from law, social sciences, and cultural studies.

Further details regarding the research agenda and specific project activities will be released in autumn 2026.
